Driving in Cyprus: Stay Relaxed, But Stay Alert

Driving through the sun-drenched roads of Cyprus often feels like a dream.

The scenic coastal highways, modern motorways, and the laid-back vibe of the island make road trips a joy. But don't let the beauty distract you too much — traffic violations come with hefty fines, especially now that a modern surveillance camera system has been rolled out across the island.

While local driving habits might appear relaxed, the traffic enforcement system is anything but. A sudden camera flash at night is your only warning that a violation has been caught. During the day, it’s even stealthier. Avoid fines (and stress) by knowing exactly where the cameras are located and what they monitor.

Types of Traffic Cameras in Cyprus

There are two main types of enforcement cameras:

1. Fixed Cameras

These are permanently installed at busy intersections and main roads. They’re clearly marked with signs and road markings and monitor the following violations:

Speeding

Running red lights

Crossing the stop line at a red light

Driving without a seatbelt

Riding without a helmet (motorcyclists)

Using a mobile phone while driving

2. Mobile Cameras

Mounted inside special vans, mobile cameras are placed at high-risk areas or frequent violation spots. They only monitor speeding. Warning signs are placed several meters ahead.

Where Are the Traffic Cameras in Cyprus?

As of early 2024, 87 fixed cameras have been installed in 29 locations across Cyprus. The goal is to reach 90 fixed and 20 mobile cameras by the end of the year.
