Armenia is embarking on a major transformation of its tourism industry, and one of the highlights of this national development program is the construction of a modern cable car in Dilijan.

Located in the picturesque Tavush Province, Dilijan will soon gain new transport and tourism infrastructure as part of a large-scale initiative supported by the World Bank, aimed at enhancing seven key tourism clusters across the country.

At a recent Armenian government session, the project was officially approved with a total funding of €120.5 million. Armenia will cover 20% of the investment, while the remaining €96.4 million will come from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) — part of the World Bank Group.

This nationwide program covers seven tourism destinations, including:

Areni, Yeghegis, and Jermuk in the Vayots Dzor Province,

Goris in Syunik,

Dvin in Ararat,

Dilijan in Tavush,

and Gyumri in Shirak.

Each region will be developed with a focus on its unique cultural heritage and natural beauty.

In Jermuk, the emphasis will be on nature conservation and eco-solutions.
Dvin will focus on restoring archaeological and architectural landmarks.
Gyumri will highlight traditional Armenian crafts and create new jobs in the cultural sector.
And in Dilijan, the centerpiece will be the construction of a scenic cable car, connecting the town to nature trails in Dilijan National Park.

This cableway will serve both as a new tourist attraction and an eco-friendly transportation solution, improving access to hiking routes while reducing pressure on environmentally sensitive areas.

The program also includes:

professional training and retraining for tourism specialists,

hotel and accommodation development,

modern tourism route creation,

and the implementation of sustainable ecological solutions.

The entire project is planned for completion by the end of 2030, with construction preparations already underway.

The development of Armenia’s tourism infrastructure is expected to attract more international travelers, boost investment flows, and stimulate regional economic growth. The upcoming Dilijan Cable Car is set to become a powerful symbol of this new era — merging nature, innovation, and a fresh vision for Armenia’s tourism potential.
