The Cyprus Statistical Service has published fresh data on car registrations for January 2025. The overall trend shows a decline in sales, but notable changes are happening within the market. The total decrease was 3.9%, with 4,077 cars registered in January, compared to 4,243 in January 2024. Passenger car registrations dropped by 7.4% in January 2025. Of these, 49.3% were new cars, and 50.7% were used vehicles.

Breaking Down the Numbers:

Petrol cars saw their market share decrease from 48.7% to 42.4%, while diesel cars fell from 10.3% to 8.1%.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have more than doubled, rising from 2.4% to 5.6%.

Hybrid cars continue to show strong growth, now making up 43.9% of the market, compared to 38.7% last year.

On the other hand, the registration volume for commercial vehicles increased by 8.9% (479 units). Light trucks saw an increase of 14.7%, reaching 405 units, and heavy trucks grew by 4.3%, reaching 48 units. Registration of articulated vehicles (trailers) also grew by 6.7%, totaling 16 units. However, the registration of rented trucks plummeted by 61.5% (only 10 units were registered), and bus sales fell by half, from 14 to 7 units.

Mopeds with engine capacity under 50cc showed a slight increase, from 18 to 21 units. Large motorcycles are gaining popularity, with registrations growing by 21% (from 281 to 340 units).

The market in Cyprus is increasingly leaning toward eco-friendly solutions, with hybrid and electric vehicles gaining momentum. The commercial vehicle segment remains stable, and interest in motorcycles continues to rise. Will 2025 be the breakthrough year for electric vehicles? Or will traditional models continue to hold the lead? Stay tuned for more trends!
