Public transportation rules in Yerevan have been updated. As of November 1, passengers must now use exact change or pay via QR code to ride city buses. This new regulation applies to buses operated by MAN, ZhongTong, and GazelCity.
How to Pay for Public Transport in Yerevan
Passengers have two options when boarding a bus:
Insert a 100-dram coin into the payment box located near the front entrance of the bus.
Scan a QR code using the Telcell Wallet app by holding your phone over the lower part of the onboard validator.
These changes aim to simplify and modernize fare collection while preparing for a unified ticketing system scheduled for implementation on January 1.
No More Cash to Drivers
The Yerevan Municipality has clarified that bus drivers will no longer accept cash or give change. According to municipal spokesperson Hayk Kostanyan, this is part of a broader public transport reform initiative:
“The primary goal is to reduce distractions for drivers and eliminate untracked cash transactions. This move also supports the upcoming shift to a fully digital ticketing system,” Kostanyan explained.
Special Offer for First-Time QR Users
To encourage digital payments, Telcell Wallet is offering a special promotion:
Passengers who purchase their first QR ticket via the app before November 30 will receive 10 free QR tickets valid for use on buses and the metro.
This bonus is a one-time offer and is only available to users buying a QR ticket for the first time through the app.
How Can Foreign Tourists Pay?
Foreign citizens, who cannot verify their identity in the Telcell Wallet app, have another option:
They can use Telcell terminals located throughout Yerevan to purchase a QR-printed ticket.
The printed receipt includes a QR code, which can be scanned on the bus validator.
QR tickets purchased from terminals are valid for 30 days, making it easy to buy multiple tickets in advance.
