A unique project will soon be launched off the coast of Agios Tychonas in Limassol, where a decommissioned 100-meter-long vessel will be sunk to create a new artificial reef.
The selected site lies near the archaeological area of ancient Amathus, adding cultural significance to this eco-tourism initiative.
This ambitious plan is part of Cyprus’s Blue Economy strategy, designed to promote sustainable tourism and protect the marine ecosystem. The project is led by the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, which has already allocated €400,000 for the mandatory eco-cleaning of the vessel before its submersion.
The creation of the artificial reef will not only enhance the underwater landscape of the region but also offer a safe and exciting new diving site for locals and international visitors. Similar reefs in Cyprus have proven successful in supporting marine biodiversity, increasing fish populations, and boosting Cyprus’s reputation as a leading dive tourism destination in the Mediterranean.

The Limassol Chamber of Commerce is now welcoming sponsors and stakeholders to support the project, which is expected to become a major attraction for both tourists and environmental enthusiasts.
Officials highlight that projects like this generate new opportunities for eco-tourism, education, and marine conservation awareness.
The chosen area is not only naturally beautiful but also holds archaeological significance. The ancient city-kingdom of Amathus, founded around 1100 BC, was once a vital trade and cultural hub. Its ancient harbor, now submerged due to natural disasters, lies at a depth of just 1–4 meters and is already included in diving and snorkeling routes.
The new reef will further expand the recreational and research area, enhancing visitors’ experiences while preserving the region’s cultural and historical heritage.
