The Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) company has announced the launch of the country’s first photovoltaic (solar-powered) charging station for electric vehicles, featuring an integrated energy storage system.
Already fully operational, this new facility is a prime example of sustainable and eco-friendly mobility in action.
Located at the CPT premises in the Geri area near Nicosia, the station is a smart energy hub that combines solar energy generation, battery storage, and EV charging — all in one intelligent system.
According to the official announcement released on Monday, June 25, the project was developed in collaboration with Ecotricity Holdings Ltd, with Huawei Greece as the technical subcontractor. The initiative is part of a wider EU project — EMS4PVBEV (Advanced Energy Management System for PV-based EV Charging Stations with Integrated Battery Energy Storage), focused on using AI-based energy management for EV charging infrastructure.
The station uses a Huawei LUNA2000 smart battery system with a capacity of 97 kWh, which has been tested and approved by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
CPT reports that the first phase of operation already shows excellent results — the station successfully charges the company’s fleet of electric buses entirely using solar energy. This significantly reduces reliance on the national power grid and lowers long-term operational costs.
“The launch of this station marks a major milestone in building a smarter, more sustainable, and efficient transport network,” said Andreas Demetriades, CPT’s Director of Technology and Innovation and the project coordinator.
“We are demonstrating real commitment to environmental responsibility and technological innovation.”
