Parliament has approved a bill introducing an €85 fine for parking violations at publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
The amendment, proposed by Green Party MP Stavros Papadouris, aims to address the widespread misuse of designated EV charging spaces.
Following revisions by the House Transport Committee, the fine now applies not only to non-electric vehicles but also to electric vehicles occupying a charging spot without actively charging. Under the new regulation, an EV is considered “in a charging position” only when its cable is physically connected to the charging station.

The provisions also extend to municipal parking areas, where similar violations have frequently been reported.
Papadouris said the amendment aims to eliminate legislative gaps highlighted through numerous public complaints about vehicles blocking access to charging stations. He described the measure as simple but essential for ensuring proper use of EV infrastructure.
The €85 penalty is aligned with the existing fine for violations related to bus lane signage.
