Starting in June 2026, Greece will begin installing 1,000 new traffic cameras, which will operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The update was announced by Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis.
He explained that the Hellenic Police will also use the system to issue fines electronically, making the entire process faster, more transparent and fully automated. The minister emphasized that such projects must follow specific procedures and official tender processes, as required for nationwide camera installations. He also mentioned that the cameras initially planned for the Greece region were not installed on schedule due to technical and administrative issues, although the ministry now expects the rollout to progress more efficiently.
Chrysochoidis added that in the coming days, the Ministry for Citizen Protection will introduce a bill to implement body cameras for police officers. This measure aims to increase public trust, provide greater accountability and ensure transparency during police operations. Many European countries have already adopted this practice, reporting fewer conflicts between citizens and law enforcement.

Addressing concerns about delays from the Data Protection Authority, the minister noted that strict European legislation governs such matters. Because of this, decisions cannot be rushed, even if the slow pace of institutional procedures often causes frustration. He stressed the need to create a public administration that works faster and more effectively, without compromising legal safeguards or citizens’ privacy.
These developments align with Greece’s broader effort to modernize its digital infrastructure. Over the past year, the country has expanded online public services, upgraded transport systems and enhanced road safety standards. The new nationwide camera network is expected to reduce accidents, improve driver behavior and support investigations into traffic violations and serious incidents.
