The Government of Armenia has announced a large-scale project to restore several historical landmarks, including both medieval churches and noble residences. The initiative will help preserve and promote the country’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

The restoration works are set to begin in early 2025, as confirmed by Armenia’s Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Zhanna Andreasyan.

Restoration of the Orbelian Prince’s Estate in Ors Village

One of the most significant restoration projects will be the noble estate of Prince Tsesar Orbelian, located in the village of Ors, Vayots Dzor Province. This estate, dating back to the 13th–14th centuries, was strategically located along one of the branches of the historic Silk Road. It stands today as one of the few surviving princely residences in Armenia.

Rebuilding the 14th-Century Caravanserai near Aghnjadzor

Another major restoration site is the 14th-century Orbelian Caravanserai, built near the village of Aghnjadzor. Positioned on the route between Vayots Dzor and Lake Sevan, this medieval rest stop served traders and travelers—including the legendary explorer Marco Polo, who is said to have stopped here during his journey to China.

This caravanserai is not only a rare architectural gem but also a testament to Armenia’s importance in medieval trade and travel networks.

Restoration of Historic Churches in Vayots Dzor

In addition to secular landmarks, two important 17th-century religious sites in the Vayots Dzor region will also be restored:

Shativank Monastic Complex, near the village of Shatin

Church of the Holy Mother of God, located in Gndevaz

These churches are invaluable for understanding the evolution of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture and will become more accessible to both locals and tourists after renovation.
