Starting on Monday, January 20, Cyprus will launch a week-long Road Safety Campaign, which will run until Sunday, January 26.
The campaign, organized by the Cyprus Police, aims to raise awareness and ensure road safety for all drivers and passengers across the island.
Focus Areas of the Campaign
The key focus of the 2025 road safety initiative will be on the following violations:
Seatbelt Use: The police will be focusing on ensuring that both drivers and passengers are wearing seatbelts, including those seated in the back.
Child Safety Seats: The correct use of child safety seats will be closely monitored to ensure the safety of young passengers.
Mobile Phone Use: Special attention will be given to drivers who are using their mobile phones while driving. Using a mobile phone while behind the wheel is a leading cause of traffic accidents and poses significant risks on the roads.
Mobile Phone Use Behind the Wheel: Penalties
If a driver is caught using a mobile phone while driving, the penalty is €150 for the first violation, along with one penalty point. If the same driver commits another violation within three years, the fine increases to €300, and the penalty points rise to four.
Seatbelt and Child Safety Seat Rules
Cypriot traffic laws require all drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts, including passengers in the back seats, when the car is equipped with seatbelts. This includes:
Children under 5 years old: Must be secured in appropriate child restraint systems based on their weight and height.
Children aged 5 to 12: Must use booster seats, seat cushions, or other child restraint devices that allow proper use of seatbelts.
It's important that the seatbelt fits the child properly—across the shoulder and chest—and does not slide up to the neck. Children aged 12 or younger are not allowed to travel in the front seat unless the car has deactivated the front airbag. If the airbag is active, it is prohibited to place the child in the front seat.
Important Exceptions: Children over 150 cm in height may travel without a child restraint device in both taxis and other vehicles.
Fines for Non-Compliance
The fines for not following the seatbelt and child safety seat regulations are as follows:
€85 for failing to use seatbelts or child restraint devices.
€85 for transporting passengers who are not wearing seatbelts in vehicles equipped with them.
