The demand for electric and hybrid vehicles in Cyprus is growing at an unprecedented rate. 

According to the latest report from the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), locals are increasingly choosing eco-friendly alternatives over traditional petrol and diesel-powered cars.

Car Registration Statistics in Cyprus (Jan–Sept 2024)

Between January and September 2024, a total of 38,819 vehicles were registered on the island—marking a 13.2% increase compared to 34,280 vehicles during the same period in 2023.

The number of passenger sedans rose to 30,344 units, up from 27,499 in 2023 (+10.3%). Of these:

12,304 cars (40.5%) were new

18,040 cars (59.5%) were used

Meanwhile, rental car registrations in Cyprus dropped significantly by 28.5%, totaling just 3,438 units.

Shift Toward Greener Transport in Cyprus

There’s a clear trend away from fossil fuels and toward sustainability:

Petrol car registrations fell to 49.7% of the total (down from 59.3% in 2023)

Diesel cars made up just 9.9% (down slightly from 10.0%)

Electric vehicles (EVs) increased from 2.6% to 3.6%

Hybrid vehicles surged from 28.1% to 36.7%

This indicates that Cyprus residents are embracing the global transition to cleaner transportation, especially in cities like Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos.

Commercial & Two-Wheeled Vehicle Trends

While eco-friendly cars are gaining traction, other vehicle segments also saw notable shifts:

Bus registrations dropped significantly to 119 units, from 266 in 2023

Commercial vehicles rose by 33.6%, from 3,266 to 4,311 units

Light trucks: up 37.4% to 3,454 units

Heavy trucks: up 26.6% to 504 units

Road tractors (trailers): up 60.4% to 170 units

Rental commercial vehicles decreased by 12%, down to 183 units

Motorcycles & Mopeds

Mopeds (above 50cc): rose to 2,933 from 2,651

Small motorcycles (under 50cc): surged to 603, up from just 230 in 2023
