The public transportation system in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is undergoing a long-awaited upgrade. The first batch of brand-new buses has recently arrived from China, marking a significant step forward in the city's urban mobility reform.
A New Era for Public Transport in Yerevan
According to Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, the municipality has purchased 171 modern 8.5-meter Zhong Tong buses and 15 new trolleybuses using funds from the city’s community budget.
“The first shipment of 79 Zhong Tong buses has already reached Yerevan. The full batch will be delivered within two weeks,” said Mayor Avinyan. “To complete the overhaul of the public transportation system and fully modernize the bus fleet, we’ll need to purchase an additional 150 to 200 buses.”
Addressing Longstanding Public Transport Issues
Yerevan’s public transport system has long suffered from overcrowding, traffic congestion, and outdated vehicles. Two key issues have contributed to these challenges:
Traffic jams, which slow down citywide movement
Failure to meet vehicle quotas set by the municipality for specific routes
Many of the older purple buses, which have been in operation for over a decade, frequently break down, causing delays and service disruptions. The new fleet of buses will gradually replace these aging vehicles, and some public transport routes will also be adjusted for better efficiency.
