At the Food and Travel Reader Awards 2025, held in London, Greece was officially named “Destination of the Year for Short-Haul Travel.”
The prestigious annual awards by Food and Travel magazine celebrate excellence across the global travel and hospitality industries — from hotels and restaurants to culinary hotspots and iconic travel destinations.
The results were determined by over 31,000 readers of the UK-based publication, most of whom are travel enthusiasts and professionals aged between 26 and 54, passionate about exploring new places, food, and wine.
This recognition highlights Greece’s continued appeal as a nearby getaway for British tourists.
With direct flights from London to Athens taking just over three hours, Greece remains one of the most accessible and culturally rich destinations in Europe.
According to Travel and Tour World, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) stated that the award reinforces Greece’s visibility and brand recognition within the British market. It also supports the country’s broader goal of promoting high-value, year-round tourism — moving beyond the traditional summer season.
In recent years, Greece has seen remarkable growth in short-stay tourism. Major destinations such as Athens, Rhodes, and Crete are leading the trend, attracting travelers looking for quick yet meaningful escapes that combine history, relaxation, and gastronomy.
Data from Euronews reveals that international arrivals increased by 4.1% in early 2025 compared to the same period last year, with a significant rise in visitors from outside the European Union.

Today’s travelers are increasingly drawn to authentic cultural experiences, and Greece offers a unique blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and world-class cuisine.
Visitors can immerse themselves in millennia of heritage at landmarks such as the Acropolis in Athens, the Palace of Knossos in Crete, or the Sanctuary of Delphi, before indulging in beloved Greek dishes like moussaka, dolmades, souvlaki, and baklava.
With more than 200 inhabited islands, including Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu, and Paros, Greece caters to every type of traveler — from luxury seekers and adventure lovers to those chasing tranquility. On the mainland, destinations like Meteora, Peloponnese, and Epirus continue to enchant visitors with their traditional charm and breathtaking landscapes.
Experts note that Greece has mastered the balance between accessibility, authenticity, and premium hospitality. The country is actively developing sustainable tourism practices while expanding travel opportunities beyond the summer months.
Thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate, crystal-clear waters, historic cities, and warm hospitality, Greece stands out as Europe’s leading year-round destination for travelers of all ages.
