In 2024, 49,616 vehicles were registered in Cyprus, representing a 9.1% increase compared to 2023, when 45,494 vehicles were registered. 

The Cyprus Statistical Service released this data on Friday, January 10, highlighting the trends and shifts in vehicle registrations across different segments.

Growth in Popularity of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Over the course of 2024, electric vehicles and hybrid cars saw significant growth in Cyprus:

The share of electric cars increased from 2.7% to 4% of all registrations.

Similarly, hybrid vehicles saw a rise in their market share, growing from 29.6% to 37.1%.

This shift reflects growing consumer interest in eco-friendly transportation options, which is becoming more evident as global environmental concerns grow.

Rise in Passenger Car Registrations

The number of passenger vehicles registered in Cyprus also showed a notable increase in 2024. 38,410 passenger cars were registered, a 4.9% rise compared to 36,608 in the previous year.

Of these, 39.2% were new cars, while 60.8% were used vehicles.

In terms of fuel types, gasoline-powered sedans saw a decrease in popularity, falling from 57.5% to 48.6%, while diesel cars accounted for 10.3% of new registrations.

Growth in Commercial and Heavy-Duty Vehicles

The commercial vehicle market showed impressive growth:

The total registrations of commercial vehicles increased by 32.9%, reaching 5,811.

Among these, light trucks made up 4,638 registrations, a 36.1% increase.

Heavy trucks grew by 30.1%, reaching 695 units.

The number of tractor units grew by an astounding 54.8%, reaching 243 units.

However, the number of rental trucks decreased by 14.2%, reaching 235 units.

Motorcycles and Mopeds Registration Surges

Motorcycle and moped registrations also saw a steady increase:

Moped registrations (under 50cc engine capacity) doubled, reaching 690 units, compared to 321 in 2023.

Motorcycles (over 50cc) saw a 17.4% increase, reaching 3,903 units, up from 3,324 in 2023.

Cyprus Car Imports: Top Countries

In 2024, Japan remained the top supplier of vehicles to Cyprus, accounting for 40.6% of all registrations. The following countries contributed significant numbers of vehicles as well:

Germany: 13.9%

United Kingdom: 6.7%

France: 6.5%

South Korea: 4.2%

Car Color Preferences in Cyprus

When it comes to car colors, white was the most popular choice, with 36.6% of vehicles being white. The next most popular colors were:

Gray: 19.9%

Black: 14.8%

Blue: 8.9%

Silver: 7.4%

December Vehicle Registrations Drop

In December 2024, the total number of vehicle registrations dropped by 5.3%, totaling 2,836 registrations, down from 2,994 in December 2023. This decline was mainly driven by a 16.9% drop in passenger car registrations, which went from 2,468 to 2,050.
