Starting December 2, 2024, the Cypriot government will launch a new phase of its grant program aimed at helping motorcyclists purchase essential protective gear. This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Public Works, aims to improve road safety for motorcyclists, who are considered one of the most vulnerable groups on the road.
How to Apply for the Subsidy
Motorcyclists in Cyprus can apply for a subsidy to purchase protective gear, such as safety vests with airbags, through an online application process on the official government website rtd.mcw.gov.cy. Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2024, and open to Cypriot citizens, EU nationals, and third-country nationals legally residing on the island.
To be eligible for the grant, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Hold a valid Category A, A1, or A2 motorcycle license.
Own a registered motorcycle.
Apply online before the December 31, 2024 deadline.
The subsidy amount will cover either €500 or the actual cost of purchasing the protective gear, whichever is lower. However, this subsidy can only be used once, so applicants will not be able to receive funding for future purchases.
Why is This Program Important?
The government’s primary goal with this program is to ensure the maximum protection for motorcyclists, a group that is particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. Over the last few months, there has been a sharp increase in the number of road traffic accidents involving motorcyclists on the island.
Since its inception, the program has already helped over 1,200 motorcyclists acquire protective gear. With the support of the government, more motorcyclists will now be able to access life-saving equipment to ensure their safety on the road.
Subsidy Budget and Future Phases
The total budget for the 2022–2024 program is €1,050,000, with €350,000 allocated annually for these grants. The government continues to work towards improving road safety and is committed to reducing the number of accidents involving motorcyclists through initiatives like this.
