On Monday, June 10, the Statistical Service of Cyprus released fresh data on car sales for the period from January to May 2024.
According to the latest figures, a total of 21,881 cars were registered on the island during the first five months of the year, marking a 22.1% increase compared to the same period in 2023, which saw 17,927 registrations.
Interestingly, the share of electric vehicles (EVs) grew to 3.4%, and hybrid vehicles accounted for 37.3% of the total registrations. The overall number of sedan registrations also increased by 19%, rising to 17,176 units from 14,434 in the previous year. Among these, 7,374 (42.9%) were new vehicles, while 9,802 (57.1%) were pre-owned cars.
The data reveals that the proportion of gasoline-powered vehicles decreased to 49.3% (from 60.8% in 2023), and diesel vehicles now make up just 10% (down from 10.6% last year). On the other hand, the share of electric vehicles increased from 2.1% in 2023 to 3.4% in 2024, while hybrids saw an increase from 26.6% to 37.3%.

Notably, the number of rental cars in Cyprus dropped by 29.4% to 1,860 units, while the number of buses fell to just 83 units. In contrast, the number of trucks grew by 42.6%, reaching 2,471 units, with light trucks increasing by 46.1% to 1,955 units, and heavy trucks rising by 35.3% to 291 units. Additionally, the number of road tractors (trailers) surged by 70.4%, reaching 92 units. The number of registered mopeds with engine capacities under 50cc rose significantly to 381 units from 61 in the same period of 2023. Motorcycles with engines over 50cc also increased, totaling 1,479 units compared to 1,373 last year.
As for May 2024, the number of registered cars in the month saw a decrease of 9.6%. A total of 4,292 cars were imported in May, compared to 4,747 in May 2023. The number of sedan registrations also fell by 14.5%, with 3,325 sedans registered in May 2024, down from 3,888 in May 2023.
