The Mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia, Giorgos Nicoletos, announced that in 2025, the municipality will replace all existing bus stops with 186 modern ones.
The extensive project is set to begin on Tuesday, January 28, and will be carried out in several phases.
It is expected that by the start of the tourist season, 72 new bus stops will be installed in the Protaras area. This decision was made due to the current poor condition of the bus stops in that region.
As part of the project, all new stops will be equipped with solar panels or connected to the nearest electrical lines. Bicycle parking racks will also be installed nearby. Additionally, the new bus stops will feature electronic boards displaying bus schedules.
"The installation of new bus stops is expected to provide passengers with more comfort, while also helping reduce traffic and minimize environmental pollution from vehicle emissions," said the mayor.
It’s worth noting that earlier last year, the Ministry of Transport of Cyprus announced a tender for the assembly and installation of new types of bus stops. This is another step towards improving and popularizing public transport on the island. The total cost of the project is estimated at 35 million euros, which includes the installation of 350 pillars with integrated technology and digital boards, 2,000 simple pillars, 1,350 small bus stops, 650 large urban bus stops, and 100 large stops suitable for mountainous areas. Over 600 existing stops will also be renovated, and 200 bicycle racks will be added to encourage cycling.
The project is funded 65% by the European Regional Development Fund, with the remaining cost covered by the national budget.
