During the ongoing construction of the new international airport near Kastelli, Crete, archaeologists made an extraordinary discovery — a unique monumental structure dating back to the Minoan civilization.
According to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the structure was uncovered on Papoura Hill, located at an altitude of 494 meters northwest of Kastelli. The excavation revealed a circular building approximately 48 meters in diameter, covering a total area of around 1,800 square meters.

A Monument Unlike Any Other
The monument is made up of eight concentric stone rings forming a circular central building (Zone A), which itself is about 15 meters in diameter, with an inner diameter of 9 meters. This inner area is divided into four quadrants. Surrounding it is Zone B, characterized by radial walls that create a labyrinth-like structure, which is believed to have had ceremonial or ritualistic purposes.
This architectural complexity is unparalleled in known Minoan archaeology.
Dating Back to 2000–1700 BC
The main period of use for this site is estimated to be between 2000 and 1700 BCE, placing it at the beginning of the Protopalatial (Early Palace) period of the Minoan civilization. However, the discovery of Later Palace Period ceramics in collapsed layers suggests the site may have remained in use or was revisited for centuries.
Preservation Over Demolition
Due to its cultural importance, the Greek government has decided to:
Preserve the structure in its entirety
Continue archaeological excavations on-site
Relocate radar systems to a different area to avoid disrupting the monument
Proceed with airport construction as scheduled, ensuring the site remains undisturbed
This is the first structure of its kind ever excavated on Crete, making it a significant new attraction in the Pediada region, and adding a powerful layer of mystery to Crete’s already rich archaeological landscape.
