Armenia invests in its aviation future with plans to build one of the region’s most advanced airport terminals.

Armenia International Airports, the operator of Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport, has announced a major $500 million investment plan to construct a new passenger terminal over the next ten years.

The ambitious project marks one of Armenia’s largest infrastructure developments in the aviation sector. The announcement was made by the company’s CEO, Marcelo Wenden, in an interview with Forbes.

According to Wenden, passenger traffic at Zvartnots has grown much faster than expected in the past two years, reaching more than 5.5 million passengers annually. The current terminal, originally designed for 3–4 million travelers per year, can no longer handle the rising flow of international visitors, making the expansion both urgent and essential.

The upcoming terminal will dramatically enhance the airport’s capacity and services. The number of boarding gates will increase from six to sixteen, while arrival halls, immigration and customs areas will double in size. The new design includes spacious lounges, upgraded waiting areas, and improved road access and parking facilities.

Once completed, the new terminal is expected to become one of the most modern airports in the South Caucasus, featuring cutting-edge energy efficiency technologies and digital systems for smoother passenger flow. The project is also expected to create hundreds of new jobs during the construction phase and after its completion, further stimulating Armenia’s economy.

The expansion project comes amid a steady rise in tourism and renewed global interest in Armenia as a travel destination. In the first eight months of 2025 alone, the country welcomed over 1.7 million foreign visitors, setting the stage for continued growth in air travel demand.

Government initiatives to boost tourism, expand flight routes, and attract new airlines from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have positioned Zvartnots as a strategic aviation gateway for the region. Analysts predict that by 2030, the airport could handle up to eight million passengers per year, transforming it into a key transportation hub comparable to those in Tbilisi and Baku.

The new terminal is slated to open by 2035, ushering in a new era for Armenia’s aviation infrastructure and reinforcing the country’s reputation as one of the most dynamic and welcoming destinations in the Caucasus.
